    NIDA's Phase 1 trial gives single oral doses of mitragynine to 32 healthy adults who used oral opioids in the past month. Its listing says some people use mitragynine to help manage opioid withdrawal. It is a safety trial, not proof it treats anything, and it was still not recruiting in October 2026.

    A study at the Houston VA medical center, led by a Baylor researcher, gives 72 people with past recreational opioid use single doses of 4 to 16 grams of kratom in capsules, 30 mg of oxycodone or a placebo. Its main measure is how much they like the drug. Recruiting since September 2026.
